An Indian sculptor and painting artist
Sivadas Edakkattuvayal was born in 1964 at Edakkattuvayal, a tiny village in Ernakulam district, Kerala, South India. Parents were Sri Nanu and Smt. Meenakshi.
Sri Nanu, a mason by profession, had the burden of a huge family on his shoulders. But this didn’t curb him from dreaming of a fair future for his only son Sivadas in Fine Arts.
He could recognise little Sivadas as a painting prodigy at a very early stage.
The child was a keen observer of Nature. The sights and sounds around and the stark realities of life made him draw amazing pictures as a child. His father always stood by him as a most reliable source of inspiration and support.
Hues of natural surroundings such as murals on temple walls, floor- drawings of serpents (Nagas), traditional arts like Kathakali amd Mudiyettu highly influenced him. His early paintings proved beyond doubt that he would have lifelong amity with colours.
During school years he participated in the District and State level competitions and bagged prizes. Later, he had a Certificate Course in Painting and Post- Diploma in Sculpture from Government RLV college of Music and institute Fine arts, Tripunithura.
Those years as an RLV student were years of great advancement in art and sculpture.
While visiting faculties like artist Puninchithayi, C K Ra, artist Porinchikkutty, Haridas master and the like were the major influences in Painting, the one and only Kanai Kunjiraman sir, the all time master of massive sculptures, just rebuilt the sculpture perspective in Sivadas.
The proximity to these legends filled great vigour and confidence in Sivadas. Just as the heat and hammering make a piece of metal sharp and strong, the openness and originally of these born men of art were in the making of a perfect and pure artist in Sivadas. He was always loved and supported by the art teachers of RLV like Thankamma teacher, Poojappura Sukumaran master, Saseendran master, Roy master and Janardhanan master.
Those great teachers in the sculpture department – Ghosh master, Raveendran Achary master and M L Ramesh master were all in close tethering with Sivadas, to his fairness and fortune. A pretty long span of seven years at RLV transformed Sivadas to an artist of great depths. The access to veteran art masters of various departments made the artist in Sivadas more meek and masterly. These years were really fruitful in the case of friendship also. Artists, singers, sculptors, dancers, theatre artists and folk experts are all there in his vast circle of friendship. This is another factor that made the man and the artist in him a beloved of all.
Going beyond the classroom and syllabus, Sivadas once created a few terracotta works in the campus, which made him the cynosure at once. This was followed by the renowned ‘Sivaparambara’ sculptures in clay. Those were the hey-days of Sivadas as a sculptor. Renowned artist K T Mathayi, national award winner K Kumaran, artists Devadas K A, Rajalakshmi, Gopidas, Prakash Vadavukod, sculptors like Jinan Naranattu and Appukuttan koothattukulam are all in his great circle of friendship.
Veteran Kathakali artist RLV Radhakrishnan is just like an elder brother to him. Sivadas later married Seena, who was a vocal student at RLV.
The’ve got two sons who tread on the pathway of Art. The elder one, Vishnu, is a known Bharathanatyam performer. Ajith, the other son, pursues his fortunes in video editing. Both of them have considerable talents in art and sculpture also.
During and after college years, he was quite active in the socio-political movements of the land; hosted painting exhibitions, conducted workshops on Painting and Sculpture, took part in theatre works and so on.
Perhaps his most remarkable contribution to the society is the founding up of ‘Thakshasila’, a creative home to enhance the artistic talents of children. It is a most original, free and unofficial platform for children to realize their true potential. The Kerala Lalithakala Academy has conducted his Painting and Sculpture exhibitions more than once. Both in Painting and in Sculpture, he has proved expertise in diverse media of work. In addition to his theatre endeavours, he has made considerable contributions in the visual media like Telefilms and Cinema. As director, art director and actor he has proved mettle.
Sivadas is in the work of a dream project right now- ‘Sdhalanama Paithruka Silpangal’. It is a series of sculptures in relation to place names. Towering personalities and milestone events from the history of Kerala are to get sculptured as part of this. One most remarkable feature of this unpretentious artist is that he has always been an ardent admirer and follower of the great Indian spirituality.
